Overwatch 2 Will be a 5v5 Game

 

Overwatch 2 is set for major changes, including a significant alteration to the hero-shooter's player-versus–player mode. Blizzard will change Overwatch2's PvP to two teams of six, the current player count in Overwatch. It will then switch to two teams with five players. This is right! The game that has been 6v6 for five years will now be 5v5.

Aaron Keller, Overwatch's game director, announced the changes during a livestream. Keller announced that the new Overwatch 2 team will include two damage heroes and two support heroes as well as one tank. Keller said that tanks can be "problematic" and "noisy," and that Blizzard "always tried hard to make our combat clear and understandable. Sometimes it's difficult to track what 11 players are doing on a battlefield. It simplifies everything, and players can understand what's going on around them and make better decisions because of it.

Keller pointed out that Overwatch has seen a dramatic change in PvP over the years. From "no limits" hero selection, to limiting players to one hero per team, to instituting a role queue and limiting hero selection, to having Overwatch impose a role queue. Blizzard also tested different team sizes and compositions (4v4, 7v7) and hopes that 5v5 will make Overwatch2 more understandable for players and viewers.

Keller pointed out that the change from 6v6 and 5v5 will have major changes for tank characters. This includes an alternate fire mode to Winston that fires condensed lightning for a longer-range blast attack, dual Fire Strikes, a cancellable Charge, and dual (shared), bubble charges for Zarya’s Projected Barrier and Particle Barrier.

Overwatch is a fantastic game. However, it's difficult to grasp what's going on as both a spectator and player. Every character has an array of weapons and abilities that can be used to their advantage. They also have bright, vivid visual effects. These characters look great and make it fun to play as Overwatch cast members. However, they can also make it difficult to get a good read on battlefield situations. Add in the voice spam, sound effects and other noises and sensory overload is guaranteed.

This problem can be solved by removing one player from each team. There will be fewer abilities to keep track of and individual players will have more time and space to assess how fights are progressing and make decisions. Blizzard will still need to improve readability by reducing the visuals for some abilities. However, trimming the team size is a great start.

Overwatch 2 5v5 makes playing tank less frustrating 

This move, when paired with the changes Blizzard has made to tank heroes will make it less frustrating to play tanks. Tank synergies can feel overwhelming when they are executed correctly, but tanks IndividuallyYou feel vulnerable and easy to exploit. As someone who has been maintaining Reinhardt since Overwatch's launch, it sometimes feels like one crowd control stun or one foot out of place can turn you into a huge sitting duck that can be downed in a matter of seconds.
 
Players will not be punished severely for making mistakes or taking hits due to the buffs Blizzard gives to tank heroes. To survive certain death situations, tank players won't have to rely on one another. The gameplay experience will be more enjoyable because individual heroes can take more damage and control the crowd before they die. 

Overwatch 2 5v5 makes it easier to learn tank heroes 

The move to 5v5 will make it easier to learn how to play tank heros. Overwatch's tank heroes can be divided into two categories: "main tanks", Reinhardt, Winston and Orisa, while "off tanks" (D.Va Roadhog, Zarya) as it stands now. While main tanks protect the team and help them open up to allied follow-up damage, they also use their abilities to help open up enemies to potential follow-up damage. Off tanks are quick-lived and powerful and can confirm kills, rescue teammates, and relieve the pressure on the main tank.

While this adds depth to the role of the tank, the problem is that these roles are community-driven and not explained to new players in tutorials. It would make tanking in Overwatch much more intuitive if every hero was designed to look like main tanks. Based on the livestreams, it seems like that's what Blizzard is doing.

Developers confirmed that Roadhog tanks, which don't do enough to protect their fellow tankers, are being reworked in order to make it more like a single main tank. This is for the best. This makes tanking much more intuitive and will encourage more players to try it. As there is currently much more damage and support players involved in matchmaking, this will improve Overwatch's overall experience.

Conclusion

Although there are good reasons to believe that your questions will be answered in a way that doesn't make you worry, this could also be considered another example of Overwatch needing to be improved more than its sequel.
